A Special Charity Event for a Laveen Student
The Laveen Community Council receives many requests for support and though it is impossible to help in every case, the event this Saturday is very close to home, as it effects one of our own Cheatham Elementary School students here in Laveen.
Instead of us telling you about the event, we're going to let an e-mail from a Laveen teacher (one of many we received) do all the talking.
"As many of you know, I have an amazing student in my class named Jason. He was diagnosed in May of 2008 with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Last year he had gone in to remission, which allowed him to come back to school this year and be a part of my class. Unfortunately, on December 2nd, at a routine doctor check-up, Jason and his family found out that he has had a relapse. Jason is currently undergoing two rounds of chemo, and is in need of a bone marrow transplant.
On January 16th, we will be having a fundraiser and registration event at my school. The donations will go toward getting new donors on the bone marrow registry. Many people hesitate to get tested to be a donor because of the fees, which is why we are having this fundraiser. Each test is $100, so any donations that you are able to make could help save Jason, and so many other people in need of a bone marrow transplant. All the test is, is a quick swab of the inside of your cheek!
People that would like to register must be between the ages of 18-60, and meet the health requirements.
There will be a pancake breakfast at our school cafeteria from 7-11 a.m., as well as fire trucks for the kids to see, and Molly the Marrow Monkey will be there to pass out suckers to the little ones!
Please come out and support this great cause! Even if you do not wish to be put on the registry, showing your support to Jason and his family will mean so much! If you are unable to attend, and would still like to make a donation, please make checks payable to "Be The Match" and send them to:
